Blogmas: What Christmas Means to Me…

I hope by now that most of you are well into the festive swing. If you’re anything like me you’ll have finished your present buying and present wrapping (blog post on this soon) and can now enjoy the pretty lights and Christmas music.

I was thinking this morning of what it is that has actually made me excited about Christmas. To be honest, there are a number of things that get me into the festive mood each year, but this year I think that the sense of family and belonging are more important than ever. 2017 will be a year of huge changes for me, what with moving away to University. So I guess this could be the last year that I’m at home throughout the festive season…

I love visiting family around Christmas: during the year I guess it becomes difficult to see people, and other things always seem to come up, so Christmas seems to b the one time that people make  determined effort. It’s so nice to become closer to loved ones!

I also love going into the Charity Shop that I volunteer at! I’ve been at Cancer Research UK now for three years, and I honestly could not have loved it more! Not only are the amazing volunteers like my second family, but the customers are lovely people, many of them with stories of their own, and it’s really inspiring to hear their experiences. At Christmas it is particularly lovely, with spirits that little higher, and I get a real sense of satisfaction from the work I do.

I remember as a child, Christmas meant lots of new toys and games, and an enjoyable day in a safe home surrounded by a loving family. In recent years I have come to appreciate that it is not always the case for children around the world, and so for the past few years I have been doing Operation Christmas Child where you simply fill a shoe box full of little presents, and a child in a poorer country will receive the gift at Christmas.

I like the motivation that seems to come with Christmas and New Year; I can go from uninspired and unmotivated to suddenly determined to do as much as humanely possible in the new year! I’m sure that it is the same for most of you, and I’m also sure that like me, by the end of January it’s all gone again!!

Well those are some of the things that come to mind when I think of Christmas, do any of you feel the same?
