Harry Potter Spells Book Tag

I’ve been so excited to do this tag, because Harry Potter (in a book tag especially) is all I really need! So a massive thank you to Ash for this nomination. AN UPCOMING RELEASE YOU WISH YOU COULD GET YOUR HANDS ON RIGHT NOW:

The Fall of Gondolin – J.R.R. Tolkein. Admittedly, I still need to get around to reading Lord of the Rings, but having watched the films, reading the series is my next step. Tolkein is such a descriptive and captivating author, so this next book should be amazing.

FAVOURITE SERIES STARTER:

Harry Potter and the Philosphers Stone. Reading that first book was like opening a beacon that was screaming THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF AN AMAZING SERIES.

A BOOK THAT GAVE YOU ALL THE WARM FUZZIES:

I loved An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. The book was so funny, and it was so uplifting the way he presents friendships and supporting one another, and also finding love. Such a good read.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU UGLY CRY:

Me Before You – Jojo Moyes. Wow this book gave me all the feels. Such a cute story but such a sad sad ending. Some may have found it uplifting and positive but I found it heartbreaking.

BOOKISH HERO OR HEROINE YOU WANT AROUND TO PROTECT YOU IN REAL LIFE:

Hermione from Harry Potter. Not only is she insanely intelligent, but she is also fearless and protected herself and her friends continuously.

A BOOK YOU INTENTIONALLY SPOILED FOR YOURSELF:

I have actually never done this! As a child I may have peeked at the last page of the odd book, but ever since I read that it was bad luck to spoil a book ending, I just never have!

A BOOK YOU WISH YOU COULD MAKE EVERYONE READ BECAUSE YOU LOVED IT SO MUCH:

Oh gosh how many am I allowed to name? The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is an amazing book. The Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices etc. are amazing series. Divergent and Hunger Games are up there too. Room was also an amazing book to read: such an emotional roller coaster but well worth every page. Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is a favourite of mine too.

A BOOK OR SERIES YOU WISH NEVER ENDED:

ALL OF THEM. Harry Potter. Hunger Games. Divergent. Mortal Instruments. I could seriously go on. For me the sign of a really good book, a really good story line and really good characters, is when I want to know more. What happens to them all afterwards?

A BOOK WITH AN UPLIFTING ENDING OR MESSAGE:

For me, it was The Book Thief. Throughout the book Liesel endures such hardship and loss as she tries to live a normal childhood through the war. She experiences things that no person, let alone child ever should, but the thing that gets her through are books and reading.  At the end it was so touching that she finally found her peace.

A BOOK YOU WISH YOU COULD FORGET YOU EVER READ:

Lord of the Flies. We had to read it in school in English and I think we picked it apart that much that everyone hated the book. I found it very repetitive and quite gruesome in places, and it’s one book that I didn’t really take a message from.

AN AUTHOR WHOSE BOOKS ALWAYS GET YOU OUT OF A SLUMP:

Daphne Du Maurier. Her books aren’t always uplifting; in fact they tend to have much deeper meanings and history behind them, but I absolutely love her writing style and I always know I will enjoy reading her novels.

A SWOON-WORTHY HERO OR HEROINE:

Hmmm…hard to say now, but my younger self would of course gone for Edward or Jacob from Twilight. It was always such a toss up between them, and of course is such a stereotype for a teenage girl, but I was more cliche back then.

A BOOK THAT CAUSED YOU TO STOP DOING ALL OTHER THINGS UNTIL YOU FINISHED IT:

The Da Vinci Code. I could not put it down until I’d found out exactly what happened: I guess that’s the sign of a really good mystery novel. I’ve also recently been told that it’s part of a series so I’ll definitely be reading the others.

A BOOK THAT WAS PAINFUL TO READ (FOR WHATEVER REASON) OR BROKE YOU:

Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys. It was just so heartbreaking and scarily historical. Once I realised that what happened to Lina, happened to so many people, it was crushing. It was one of those books that brought the history of it to life and made me want to read all of the context.

A BOOK THAT HAD YOU LAUGHING OUT LOUD:

Bridget Jones’ diary. I’m not normally one for a funny book but this one made me genuinely laugh. It’s just so honest and so well written it was a definite mood lifter. I also found The Devil Wears Prada a very funny book, so I was very disappointed when the film didn’t quite convey that same humour.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU WANT TO SEND IT (OR YOUR E-READER) FLYING:

Girl Interrupted. Purely because her struggle and her feelings seemed so obvious to me it was frustrating to see the ignorance of the health system in helping her. Nobody seemed to understand her, in fact misunderstanding her frustration and her distress.

BOOKISH WORLD YOU WISH YOU COULD VISIT:

An obvious choice but it has be Harry Potter again. Just everything about it is so magical and different. So until someone invents a Port key, I guess Harry Potter Studios will do!

A BOOK WITH A SHOCKING TWIST OR ENDING:

Noughts and Crosses. The ending was so brutal and shocking I cried so much. It was a reality check that Malorie Blackman had written an ending which represented the sad truth of history, albeit a little different, but even so it was brutally honest and so sad.

A CHARACTER DEATH THAT DESTROYED YOU:

Callum from Noughts and Crosses. This follows on from my previous answer: I don’t think I got over that one for a while. That whole series has got be one of my all time favourites but Callum’s death made me sob.

BEST SERIES CONCLUSION:

If my reviews of the Hunger Games series doesn’t give it away, I’m not sure what will. It has to be Mockingjay. As far as series finales go, this one is top of my list. I’ve spoken to some people who said that by this book the series had become dry, but I felt it was the perfect ending to the dystopian world that Collins created. Despite all the sadness and loss in this last book, it was honest, it felt real, and the ending was so bittersweet yet uplifting, it was great.
